As mentioned in previous discussions, the need to create an initramfs adds another layer of complexity when performing tests or preparing a BSP for a board. Taking care of initramfs is always a bit painful, it also occupies space and is another level of complexity in the stack. A practical example as mentioned by Kees is that Chrome OS has a limited amount of storage available for the boot image as it is covered by the static root of trust signature. This feature is already used by Android and Chrome OS in devices already shipped to the market/end-users.
