I suggest Nix first installed on any Linux distro before jumping into NixOS (if that's what you mean).

The tool / package management itself can be safely installed and removed; I wouldn't worry about a VM.

It's 100% resides within a directory /nix at the root.
(`sudo rm -rf /nix` does a **complete** removal of everything)
