hmm, for some reason I remember that `ubuntustudio-controls` had to be started as root, but now I started it as normal user.
Before that though, I killed the root instance of jack.
After starting `ubuntustudio-controls`, I then started jack, and it did so successfully, although:
1. I did not see any logs in the custom log dir I specified in `qjackctl`
2. Now my audio is gone.
