Yeah it used to work fine, it's just that the new `ubuntustudio-controls` from the PPA might be an issue. 
So the way I used to do things is: 
1. Log in
2. Issue `qjackctl` in terminal
3. Start JACK using the green Play button.
  * Optional: Wire up the connections if they aren't already.
