BaronHK 1 point ยท 6 minutes ago Thanks to Microsoft's abuse of fake firmware security with its million bugs to fix the unfixable Windows malware problem (except that it doesn't....it just inherited all the BIOS bugs that were really nasty and kept going, but that's Wintel for you), you can't "recompile the kernel" and install your own even if you want to with "Secure" Boot on. Apple's using it in a way where your Mac is e-waste after a few years because it artificially prevents using anything else anyway. I can't tell you when the answer to a problem I was having on Linux was "recompile a kernel" or "learn C++", because this is nonsense. I can tell you all of the productivity lost before switching to Linux full time due to reinstalling Windows whenever it randomly crapped out for apparently no reason or drive-by malware attacks. Since Windows has no security model, it's like if the left hook doesn't get you (pretty much anything you install, sooner or later, and if it has auto-update it'll be its own solution which can dump malware after the fact), the right one will (just visit a website or open "the wrong file"). With all of the junk and crap that Microsoft has pushed on people over the years when they were important, they might as well have just named their hardware the Internet Explorer Phone while they were at it. Windows is equally toxic. Windows will never be secure because the model is "install random EXE files from the internet somewhere", and their attempt to clone Apple backfired because nobody was going to rush in to artificially limit themselves to the collection of mostly fake apps in the Windows Store where it was $5.99 for an app that told you how to install Firefox. Now the latest Internet Explorer (Edge) is not just eventually shutting up and sitting there quietly.... The "new Microsoft" insists that using any other browser is unacceptable and that "Edge" will occasionally wake up and try to take over all your defaults again and steal your data every once in a while anyway, even if you say no. Their updater is such a disaster that the inventor of DirectX had to borrow a client's Mac because Windows 10 corrupted its own bootloader with a monthly update. Stick a fork in it... Windows 10 is some "I got this crap on a rollback laptop at Walmart and don't know any better...." stuff and everyone else headed for the exits a long time ago.
