What a year again at FOSDEM! The community met at our Hackathon on Friday and worked on fancy ideas. We talked to thousands of people at our booth, and hosted the Decentralised Communication Devroom on Sunday. But Matrix was truly everywhere at FOSDEM.

🔗Hackathon

We started right before FOSDEM with a Hackathon on Friday, 30th of January. About a hundred people joined us with ideas of projects to hack on, or problems to discuss. After spending the first hour listing the topics or projects people were interested in, we formed groups.

We spent the day hacking and talking, took a short pizza break for lunch thanks to Famedly’s sponsorship, and went back to work. At the end of the day people presented the result of what they had been working on. Among others, people worked on:

Nexus, a brand new flutter client from the community

An IKEA-style assembly instructions to join a MatrixRTC call

Encrypted Search in Element X Android (still in progress)

Contributions to the sticker and emoji MSC

A bot that takes images posted in a specific room and prints them on a receipt printer

The Matrix Conference 2026 website and Call for Proposals launch

But also discussions about MSC4256, the MLS mode for Matrix

You can watch the recording of our live stream to catch up with all the ideas people had! Some projects succeeded, some projects didn’t, but we’re happy about the outcome: in all cases people tried to create something new or to contribute to an existing project. In each instance, participants learned along the way, which was the primary goal of the hackathon.

Additionally, an attendee raised an important point. They said: “I came with questions, I expected to meet factions who want to solve the problem differently, but we could talk the problem through and make progress”. This is a real testament to the utility of such events, and we can only encourage more organizations to join the Foundation so we can make even more of these.

After the presentations, we had a chill out evening with dinner sponsored by Element, with Spezi and other drinks sponsored by Famedly. Everyone had earned their one-time edition Matrix Cap!

We want to thank Element and Famedly again for sponsoring the event and giving us the opportunity to meet in person, and the local hackerspace HSBXL for hosting us once again.

🔗Booth

The next morning, on Saturday, 31st January, FOSDEM itself started. Our booth team was quickly ready to welcome visitors… and we had several thousands of them over the weekend!

This could be because we gave away more than 100 T-shirts and a handful of caps, or this could be because people wanted to try the famous Swedish liquorice sweets that our community member Magnus brought, like every year!

We also had cool demos on the stand. Dominik and Kim have set up an air-gapped deployment of Matrix to showcase the various clients and administration tools. Christian and Florian used the hackathon time to set up a demo with a receipt ticket printer that would print whatever you send in a specific room, and one with an e-ink screen that would display whatever you sent in the same room.

Overall, the discussions with attendees were overwhelmingly positive. Most of them were about how Matrix is useful to people, expressing that our work matters and that the software has come a long way. We're moved by all this gratitude and are pleased to see that people believe that the ecosystem is going in a good direction.

Our gratitude goes to Dominik Rimpf who set up the infrastructure for volunteers to take shifts, and who helped us set up the demo at the booth, but also to Kim for setting up the demo on the laptops we had with us, as well as the rest of the Events Working Group for helping with the organisation of the event. We also want to thank Element who donated the three laptops we used to the Foundation, so that we can have a “Booth Box” ready to follow us everywhere we go.

Finally, a big shout out to all the volunteers who helped us staffing the booth and answering the attendance's questions: Mikhail, Oleg, kitsune, Bruno, weeman, anoa, Nico, td, Mithgarthsormr, stereo, Dave, Denise, Pierre, Jade, Guillaume, Milton, Tom, Hans, Sergey, QuadRadical, and Kai.

🔗Devroom

On Sunday, 1st February, we still had our booth, but we also coordinated the Decentralised Communication devroom next door. It was a full day devroom between 9am and 5pm. Traditionally Sunday morning is the slowest moment of FOSDEM, but the devroom filled up very quickly. By 10am every seat was taken and we had to start refusing people.

We received representatives from ROOST, Draupnir and our own Trust & Safety team to discuss how to keep people safe in decentralised environments.

On the Matrix side, we gave our famous State of the Union. Element explained how making Element Web more modular would help make it snappier. Neil also talked about the problem of becoming sustainable when you give away software for free. Finally, their VoIP team showed a fun demo of a Godot game using MatrixRTC behind the scenes for the multiplayer mode.

The devroom also welcomed our friends from the XMPP, DASL, ATProto and ActivityPub / Bonfire communities.

🔗FOSDEM Online

Not only did we have a Hackathon, a booth, and contributions to a devroom: Matrix was also everywhere at FOSDEM. Indeed, FOSDEM has an online side. Element hosted the infrastructure and configured and monitored the rooms, widgets, and bots that run the online side of FOSDEM.

In terms of numbers:

attendees.fosdem.org has 57,332 users, including 796 new users since last year

There were 929 members in the FOSDEM 2026 space.

People exchanged ~538 messages/hr at the peak on Saturday at ~10:30

People exchanged 17,000 messages total

We’re incredibly proud that the FOSDEM team renewed their trust in us, and that Matrix was a satisfying experience for the largest open source experience in Europe.

🔗Elsewhere at FOSDEM

Finally, Matrix was also on the lips of many, regularly cited as an example of what to do. For example, in The Hidden Layer: Bringing Protocol Governance into Digital Policy, Matrix was presented as an example of good governance.

The Foundation’s legal Data Protection Officer (DPO) monitors the evolution of the legal landscape, and shared her insights in her talk Digital Omnibus: is the EU's tech simplification a Risk or Opportunity for Open Source?.

In the talk From Policy To Practice; Open Source in The Dutch Government, the Dutch government explained why they used OpenDesk, which includes Element, and why it makes sense for them to fund their upstreams more.

Both ZenDis and DINUM are using Matrix. They also both sent representatives in the Open Source & EU Policy Track, for example in this panel: Public Procurement for Digital Sovereignty.

In Linux on the Desktop – Why Digital Sovereignty Starts Here, the speaker highlighted Matrix as the solution of choice for sovereign chat.

In his talk In Defense Of GnuPG, Özcan Oğuz pointed out that Matrix was the simple solution that Just Works™ to get secure conversations online.

Finally, Matrix community member Jade also gave a talk about the Continuwuity homeserver software in Signed, Sealed, Stolen: How We Patched Critical Vulnerabilities Under Fire.

🔗Where to Find Us Next

FOSDEM is an important milestone for the Matrix ecosystem, and we’re proud of how successful it has been for us this year again. But FOSDEM is not the only conference we attend. Our next major milestone is The Matrix Conference 2026, and this year we will meet in Malmö, in Sweden, in October!

We’re thrilled to launch our Call for Proposals and encourage you to submit yours early on. We want to strike a good balance in talks between organisational and community talks - the Conference is for the whole ecosystem! Attendees should get a good idea of where Matrix is today, but we are always excited to go wild about what Matrix could be in the future.

We’re grateful to the prospective sponsors who have already reached out to us to manifest their interest in supporting the Conference! You are the ones who enable such events. With your help, the Matrix ecosystem can gather, exchange ideas, show prototypes, and converge on solutions that benefit all. If you’re interested in sponsoring too, please reach out to conference@foundation.matrix.org while we put the final touches on our sponsorship brochure.

In the meantime, our community is organising or attending other events. You can catch up with what they're about on their website.

This is one of the exciting ways to come talk to us, but it's not the only one!

This year we're organising a hackathon before FOSDEM, we'll have a booth during FOSDEM itself, and we're coordinating the Decentralised Communication devroom!

🔗Friday, 30th January - Community Hackathon & Lounge Evening

Would it be FOSDEM if it didn't start with our traditional Matrix Community Event on Friday? This time, we will be organizing a collaborative hackathon for the full day, starting at 9:00 CET. Don't be late: we'll use the first hour to select tasks and form teams!

The Matrix ecosystem is all about lifting everyone through federation and interoperability. That's why in this hackathon for the Community, we will not compete for the best project, but we will have a joint mission: The Matrix Federation is endangered by Big Silo trying to control our minds, and we can fight back!

The mighty scientists funded by our sponsors helped us develop Brain Protection Caps. They shipped a crate with the caps, and tried to send us the combination of the lock on Matrix. Unfortunately, their server went down before they could send the message! To crack the combination we need to level up our skills and fill our collective experience bar by collaborating on hackathon projects.

During the first hour, people will list what they want to work on, and form teams on the spot. Every project helps us fill our experience bar. Our skills increase when we work on anything related to Matrix.

Code, project management, art, documentation: every contribution will earn you Achievements that will fill our collective experience bar! Let’s strive to unlock the Matrix caps by mentoring each other, hacking on new ideas and bonding together as a community.

The hackathon is first and foremost about having fun and learning. We want to know what you worked on, what worked, what you struggled with, and what surprised you. We'll conclude the day by asking teams to summarize their day to others. We would like to livestream the sessions on our website, but you can opt-out if you're not comfortable with it.

After the project presentations, we will stay in HSBXL in the evening for a public Matrix Lounge Evening. We're inviting the entire Matrix community to spend a relaxed evening with food, drinks and interesting discussions about Matrix! We're asking all hackathon attendees to register so we can best organize the event.

🕐️ Friday 30, 09:00 - 17:00 CET (local time)

Once more, we are grateful to the FOSDEM organizers for granting us a booth for the whole weekend! If you want to come talk to the team, share your gripes and ideas or come see cool demos, this is your opportunity to do so! We will bring merch and stickers for the community to help us spread the word.

We're looking for volunteers to run the booth with us. This includes talking to the community, sharing project news, and distributing merch. Don't worry if it's your first time: We have a booth handbook ready for volunteers and want to limit the time commitment to 2 hours per day.

Reach out to events-wg@foundation.matrix.org or in #events-wg:matrix.org if you're interested in staffing the booth with us! We will work out together which slot works best for you.

🕐️ Saturday 1 to Sunday 2, 09:00 - 18:00 CET (local time)

This year FOSDEM organisers tried to accommodate as many projects as possible by asking devroom managers to focus on themes more than on specific projects. They generously granted us a full day devroom on Sunday, 1st February, to talk about Decentralised Communication, and we're delighted to have received so many proposals!

We're rating which talks we think are the most interesting for the Decentralised Communications community, and will finalize a schedule by 15th December. We're looking forward to meeting people from the various decentralised communication communities, exchanging ideas, and seeing how we can collaborate more!

The Matrix.org Foundation will coordinate the FOSDEM 2026 Decentralised Communication Devroom, and is requesting submissions for talks!

One of the most important roles for Free & Open Source Software right now is liberating users from being trapped and exploited by Big Tech. This is especially true of the fundamental need for humanity to communicate safely and securely, without being dependent on gatekeepers who pose a single point of control and failure.

We'd like to invite you to propose technical talks covering the very latest progress across the whole space of Decentralised Communication - whether that's messaging/VoIP projects built on Matrix, XMPP, DeltaChat, ActivityPub, ATProto, Automerge etc. This isn't just about open standards or realtime communication: this is ensuring that we as individuals have full sovereignty over our ability to communicate - and can do so safely across fully open networks, decentralised across the whole Internet, protected from propaganda and the whims and vicissitudes of today's tech giants and their stakeholders.

We're particularly interested in technical talks on:

Providing mainstream-usable alternatives to centralised proprietary platforms

Projects and protocols highlighting approaches which other projects and protocols can learn and benefit from

The enormous challenge of safety in decentralised communication: mitigating spam; identifying and filtering slop; sharing blocklists without creating echo-chambers or enabling meta-abuse; protecting E2EE and fighting ChatControl; T&S tooling; etc.

The challenge of verifying E2EE identity (decentralised key transparency etc)

Local-first / P2P communication systems without any point of serverside failure.

Marketing talks are not welcome.

🔗Key dates

Please note the following deadlines, that are global for FOSDEM and that we can't extend.

Conference dates: 31 Jan and 1 Feb 2026

Submission deadline: 30 November

Announcement of selected talks: 15 December

You must be available in person in Brussels to present your talk.

🔗Talk Details

The talks can follow one of the two formats:

20 min talk + 10 min Q&A, for topics that can be covered briefly

50 min talk + 10 min Q&A, for more complex subjects which need more focus

We strongly encourage you to prepare a demo when it makes sense, so people can actually see what your work looks like in practice.

Of course, the proposal must respect the FOSDEM terms as well:

The conference language is English. All content must relate to Free and Open Source Software. By participating in the event you agree to the publication of your recordings, slides and other content provided under the same licence as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY).

🔗Code of Conduct

All speakers and attendees agree that all of the presentations and discussions in our Devroom are held under the guidelines set in the FOSDEM Code of Conduct. We expect attendees, speakers, and volunteers to follow the CoC at all times.

Proposals must be submitted on FOSDEM's conference management system. When submitting a proposal make sure to select the Decentralised Communication Devroom.

We expect to receive more requests than we have slots available. The Devroom organisers will be reviewing the proposals and accepting them based on the potential positive impact the project has on the Decentralised Communication space.

No particular project or protocol will be favoured or prioritised in selecting talks; instead the most interesting talks will be selected from across all parties, favouring project diversity wherever possible.

If a project proposal has been turned down, it doesn't mean we don't believe it has good potential, and we strongly encourage you to highlight it within your ecosystem's news bulletins to give it some visibility.

The Matrix.org Foundation and its growing community were once again present at the biggest OSS conference in Europe, and it's been a tremendous success! It was an opportunity for us to gather, share ideas and debate about ongoing topics, meet the broader FOSS community and present our work.

🔗Fringe Event

With 8000 visitors, FOSDEM is primarily a place to share your work with others and present the latest developments to those interested. But it's not necessarily the best venue for conversations within the community about topics that are still in-flight.

Because so many people are doing the trip to gather in a single city, it remains a good opportunity to gather your own community in a more intimate setting. This is precisely what Fringe Events happening before or after FOSDEM are about.

Our deepest gratitude to them and the Brussels Hackerspace HSBXL for giving us a place to gather.

The barcamp / unconference format we adopted allowed participants to mention what they were interested in talking or hearing about, with the help of Yan Minagawa who is a fantastic event facilitator!

Some people were comfortable getting their talk recorded, but some were not. You can find the full list of talk recordings in our Fringe Event YouTube playlist.

The Matrix booth was located in the realtime communications corner, next to the XMPP and Linphone friends who have been lovely neighbors. Shout out to the XMPP gang in particular for setting up the Realtime Comms Lounge with bean bags that must have been a logistical nightmare to bring to FOSDEM!

The booth was very crowded, we got plenty of enthusiastic visitors telling us what they love about Matrix, with occasional minor support requests. People have been overwhelmingly supportive and curious about the future of Matrix.

We gave away 100 T-shirts in less than a day, asking people for a donation to the Foundation in exchange for the T-shirt. If you didn't already, you can make a donation today!

This year the booth has been opened up to the broader ecosystem and volunteers, and that was a significant success. Many thanks to the whole roster: Dominik, Milton, Sumner, td, Nico, Kim, weeman, Nadine, Timo, Anoa, Greg, Bram, Robin T, stereo, BenP, Will, Neil, Florian and everyone who showed up at the booth to support the crew!

A special thought to MatMaul, Robin and Hans v. Zijst who volunteered but fell sick and took the right decision not to spread germs. You were missed, but you did the right thing.

We organize an event before FOSDEM for the community to meet and talk about Matrix without fear of missing out on all the great talks at FOSDEM. The event will take place on January 31 at 1 pm CET at HSBXL and last the whole afternoon. Please note that HSBXL moved since last year.

Please note that the Matrix Community Event has the same Health & Safety Policy as the Matrix Conference. Extremely briefly: You will need to wear a mask while indoors, except while eating and drinking.

As last year, attending the event is free, and we're looking for sponsors to show their commitment to the ecosystem by refreshing our community with drinks and feeding it with pizzas! Of course, you will be credited in our event wrap-up post on matrix.org. We're open to additional ideas to get you the recognition you deserve.

Join the FOSDEM Barcamp room if you're interested in the event, and reach out to events-wg@foundation.matrix.org to sponsor!

This year again, we are happy to have a booth for the duration of the event. This is our opportunity to talk with the broader open-source community, share our latest updates, and listen to people's feedback. We can also help the broader community spread the word with cool stickers and T-shirts!

Don't worry if it's your first time: We have a booth handbook ready for volunteers and want to limit the time commitment to 2 hours per day.

Reach out to events-wg@foundation.matrix.org if you're interested in staffing the booth with us! We will work out together which slot works best for you. People who sign up before December 15 are entitled to a special edition T-shirt!

Be it a technical talk about state resolution or a success story about how Matrix got deployed in your organization, we want to hear about it all!

Hello everyone,

The Matrix.org Foundation is excited to host a Matrix.org Foundation and Community devroom in person next year again at FOSDEM! Half a day of talks, demos and workshops around Matrix itself and projects built on top of Matrix.

We encourage people working on the Matrix protocol or building on it in an open source project to submit a proposal! Note that companies are welcome to talk about the Matrix details of their open source projects, but marketing talks are not welcome.

🔗Key dates

Conference dates: 1st and 2nd February, 2025

Devroom date: 2nd February, 2025

Submission deadline: Sunday, 1st December, 2024

Announcement of selected talks: Friday, 15th December, 2024

You must be available in person in Brussels to present your talk.

If you have any questions about the CoC or wish to have one of the devroom organisers review your presentation slides or any other content for CoC compliance, please email us and we will do our best to assist you.

🔗Submitting a Proposal

Proposals must be submitted on FOSDEM's conference management system: https://pretalx.fosdem.org/. Heads up that last year FOSDEM shelved the good old Pentabarf in favour of Pretalx. All submissions must go through Pretalx: https://pretalx.fosdem.org/fosdem-2025/cfp. When submitting a proposal, make sure to select the Matrix.org Foundation & Community track.

We expect to receive more requests than we have slots available. The devroom organisers will be reviewing the proposals and accepting them based on the potential positive impact the project has on Matrix, as defined in the Mission section of https://matrix.org/foundation.

If a project proposal has been turned down, it doesn't mean we don't believe it has good potential. Maintainers are invited to join the #twim:matrix.org Matrix room to give it some visibility.

This year again the Matrix.org Foundation was at FOSDEM, and what a huge energy boost it has been for us! Between a Fringe Event for the Matrix community to gather, a booth where the vast majority of people came by to show their support for our work, a devroom with four hours of awesome Matrix content, and last but not least a main track talk where Matthew covered what we had been doing for the past year… It has been a very intense weekend!

🔗Fringe Event

The first stop in our FOSDEM journey was the Fringe Event on Friday afternoon at HSBXL, a hackerspace that was very on-brand: you need to follow the white rabbit to get in. More than a 100 of us gathered in that disused factory to talk about everything Matrix.

Thanks to the sponsorship of Nordeck and Famedly and to the extensive efforts of Adrian and the rest of the HSBXL staff, the Foundation could offer 70 pizzas and crates and crates of drinks to the community. Not only was it great to meet people in the flesh: we could also have a tonne of interesting discussions around the Foundation’s governance, funding, trust & safety tooling, and plenty more that we’re going to factor into our roadmap. And look at this happy community!

🔗A crowded Booth

After an already successful Friday, it was time to head to FOSDEM itself: for two days the booth was manned by a tireless team, answering questions from a very enthusiastic community. What struck me the most this year was the number of Matrix t-shirts and hoodies people wore at the conference before even stopping by our booth.

Needless to say, Matrix is extremely popular in OSS communities. Most people knew and already loved Matrix when coming to the booth, a few didn’t know Matrix, and even fewer people told us where we need to improve for them to consider using it.

We brought a box of 100 t-shirts and several thousands of stickers with us this year. Some t-shirt sizes were sold out on the first day, and by the end of the weekend we had sold everything. Lesson learnt: bring much more next year!

🔗A main track talk selected for the highlights

Matrix is well on its way to become the one ubiquitous protocol that will finally open up the communication silos. During the past year, a lot has been going on. As a testament to Matrix maturity, the majority of our work was around polishing the rough edges and stabilising the protocol, rather than launching plenty of new features.

In his main track talk, Matthew covered the past year in Matrix, our implication in the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and how Matrix could possibly be part of the solution for WhatsApp to become interoperable and compliant with the regulation.

  Today's Matrix Live:

<youtube-player video-id="s5BrVVf0B1I"></youtube-player>

Both Wired and TechCrunch picked up the news that Element has been experimenting with DMA interoperability with WhatsApp via Matrix.

🔗A packed devroom

This year again we had the opportunity to get a Matrix Devroom: more than 4 hours of Matrix content for a delighted audience. Matrix State of the Union, DMA & Interoperability, MatrixRTC and more: there was a talk for everyone!

The devroom happened in a room twice as big as last year’s: it was still packed most of the time. We couldn’t be happier about the enthusiasm for Matrix that we have seen this year again! If you missed a talk you were interested in, you can still catch up with our FOSDEM 2024 YouTube Playlist.

🔗Remote and local online attendance

The online side of the conference went very smoothly. It is a testament to the hard work of the Matrix team who got to adapt it to the FOSDEM Pretalx instance, superseding the (in)famous Pentabarf instance that it relied on so far.

Unsurprisingly, with roughly 7,980 signups online and 4,000 daily active users the online attendance is very far from the levels we have seen at the peak of the pandemic when FOSDEM couldn’t happen in person (plus we collectively forgot to publish the FOSDEM space URL anywhere!). Most people who wanted to attend FOSDEM were there in person, but we were here for people who couldn’t make it for whatever reason.

More surprisingly, I spotted a certain number of people sitting down in the hallways on their phones and laptops, in the middle of one of the largest European open source conferences. They were not catching a break from the conference: they were attending the conference online, even if they were on-site! With more than 10k visitors, some attendees couldn’t make it to the devrooms they wanted to attend… so they attended online. We even caught Amandine tuning into the EU Public Policy devroom from the Matrix devroom!

🔗You’re making this possible

This event was an enormous morale booster for the whole team, but we couldn’t make Matrix in the first place without your support. Whether you are an individual or an organisation who benefits from Matrix, please consider supporting the Foundation financially or becoming a member to steer it in a direction that makes sense for you.

We will meet on Friday 2, starting at 13:00 CET for a BarCamp. It’s a sort of informal conference where people can meet, talk, and decide informally of an agenda for the afternoon. There are excellent illustrated directions on hsbxl.be/enter to be sure you find the way to HSBXL, situated at Rue de la Petite Île 1, 1070 Anderlecht, Brussels.
We will likely do a Matrix Live Live, live streamed from the hackerspace The format is not set in stone (it’s a BarCamp!) but it will very probably contain a presentation about the future of the Foundation, and potentially demos and more speakers from the audience. We’re looking forward to meeting you there and I’m sure we will have plenty of great conversations given how vibrant the ecosystem is.

A warm thank you to Nordeck, FUTO and Famedly who are sponsoring this event, allowing us to offer free drinks and pizzas to the audience! State of Matrix, Matrix as a potential answer to Digital Market Act, widgets, moving communities, and more: we have a full schedule covering all the hot Matrix topics!

You can find the full schedule of the Matrix devroom on FOSDEM’s website, and you can add it to your calendar automatically with this ics.

Finally, Matthew submitted a talk to the main track with his Spec Core Team lead hat on, and it was accepted! On Sunday 5, at 10:00 in Janson you will be able to hear him talk about how Matrix is “Opening up communication silos with Matrix 2.0 and the EU Digital Markets Act”

The team is looking forward to seeing you in Brussels!

For the past two years, FOSDEM couldn’t happen in-person. Fortunately we could
help, and Matrix hosted the world's largest free & open source software
conference online! This year we were finally back in-person… but not only.

The set-up we have arranged in 2021
and polished in 2022
has proved to be robust and served us well during the pandemic. Returning to an
in-person conference didn’t mean we had to throw it all away… quite the
opposite!

This year the OSS community could gather in-person, go see each other’s stands,
and attend all too few of all the fascinating talks the speakers had prepared
for us… but the conference was yet more.. Some of us couldn’t make it in person
but could attend FOSDEM online from its Matrix Space. Devrooms were broadcasted
live into the Matrix rooms where devroom managers and speakers could interact
with the online audience.

In total, thousands of users joined us online, both locally and remotely as
seen from the FOSDEM homeserver: an amazing audience given the possibility to be
on site.

For us, it was also an opportunity to announce Matrix 2.0 to a live audience!
Matrix 2.0 doesn’t mean we’re making breaking changes in the spec. It’s more of
a nickname we gave to the milestone we had promised in summer to deliver by the
end of the year
and had far too much giving the mother of all demos to a packed room of nearly
1500 people.

  Today's Matrix Live:

This year was also the first ever in-person devroom for the Matrix Foundation
and Community. We had many proposals and could have used the whole day, but we
had to share with many other deserving communities. We’re extremely grateful to
FOSDEM organisers for the devroom… and it was a huge success! At many points the
room was completely packed, with no seats left at all.

We could shoehorn 8 talks in
the in-person devroom. Picking them was really difficult! When one of the
speakers unfortunately called in sick, the devroom healed the wound and filled
the gap very quickly.

The devroom started with a quick intro to Matrix from Matthew & Amandine.

  Today's Matrix Live:

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=dPgYy-Y4f7w

<youtube-player video-id="dPgYy-Y4f7w"></youtube-player>

Florian followed with a talk about MatrixRTC to explore what Matrix can do
beyond instant messaging

  Today's Matrix Live:

<youtube-player video-id="P--LwIB3deA"></youtube-player>

Then Matthew did an awesome demo of Third Room and “3D widgets” (user generated
content) that can be embedded into its worlds. Of course with a nice “The Matrix
in Matrix” scene.

  Today's Matrix Live:

<youtube-player video-id="nG8qJ4on00Y"></youtube-player>

Stunning 3D worlds are great, but the most popular use case for Matrix today is
instant messaging. And we did a lot as the Matrix Foundation to significantly
improve the performance with Sliding Sync, using matrix-rust-sdk as the showcase
implementation. Kegan and Ben covered Sliding Sync and matrix-rust-sdk
respectively, while Mauro showed us how Element X, the first client to use it,
doesn’t stop here and goes way beyond to provide a snappy, sturdy, polished
client.

<youtube-player video-id="5iIs1zWuVOU"></youtube-player>

Kim and Oliver from Nordeck made an interesting presentation about how widgets
can make Matrix a rich app creation environment.

The Trixnity project then introduced their fast, multi-purpose, well-tested SDK.
A talk you don’t want to miss, particularly if you’re into Kotlin.

<youtube-player video-id="zDftIZm-DZ0"></youtube-player>

Pierre from Technostructures introduced us to Kazarma
a bridge between Matrix and ActivityPub. In Pierre’s own words: “we talked a lot
about interoperability, and we found it sad that we talked about
interoperability for proprietary platforms, not with alternative decentralised
networks, so we tried doing that”. And they did. Bravo Pierre and the team!

  Today's Matrix Live:

<youtube-player video-id="D3olH1aUCkQ"></youtube-player>

Finally Yan concluded the in-person devroom with a speedrun of all the Matrix
projects he could find around. The video is not out yet, so we’ll add it to the
second follow-up blog post: the one with the online devroom conferences!

🔗Matrix for more than remote attendance

FOSDEM staff used the Matrix rooms for on-site support. Whether the camera was
blurry, microphones didn’t work, or there was a missing power plug: staff could
be notified and answer very quickly before sending someone to actually solve the
issue. But it also allowed staff to notify devroom managers for small
adjustments, if speakers ever disappeared from the scene.

Staff also told us Matrix worked much more reliably than anything other than
walkie talkies from a coordination perspective and was more versatile. They
consider narrowing down their use of walkies next year in favour of a deeper
integration with Matrix. We’re excited to see that Matrix was yet again a great
solution in the stressful, high paced context of a conference that gathered
several thousand people in-person and several thousand more online.

🔗Attending in-person

Finally, a large part of the joy of attending FOSDEM comes from the people you
meet there. The least we can say is that our stand was busy. We ran out of
stickers and medium size t-shirts early on Sunday morning, but above all we had
plenty of interesting discussions.

A few people discovered Matrix during FOSDEM and were blown away by messages
making it from Slack to Discord before their eyes, all thanks to Matrix and
bridges. The overwhelming majority of people who came to us were already happy
users willing to discuss architecture, our plans for the future, or even to
verify each other with QR Codes or emoji.

We want to thank the FOSDEM staff for organising this edition and using Matrix
again: a successful return to the in-person format that builds on the online
experience of the past two years. See you next year folks!

This year, the Matrix.org Foundation is excited to host the first ever
Matrix.org Foundation and Community devroom in person at FOSDEM. Half a day of
talks, demos and workshops around Matrix itself and projects built on top of
Matrix.

We encourage people working on the Matrix protocol or building on it in an open
source project to submit a proposal! Note that companies are welcome to talk
about the Matrix details of their open source projects, but marketing talks are
not welcome.

This call for participation is only about the physical devroom. A separate CfP
will be issued for the online devroom once there are more details about it.

20 min talk + 10 min Q&A, for topics that can be covered briefly

50 min talk + 10 min Q&A for more complex subjects which need more focus

We strongly encourage you to prepare a demo when it makes sense, so people can
actually see what your work looks like in practice!

Of course, the proposal must respect the FOSDEM terms as well:

We expect to receive more requests than we have slots available. The devroom
organisers will be reviewing the proposals and accepting them based on the
potential positive impact the project has on Matrix (as defined in by the
Mission section of https://matrix.org/foundation).

If a project proposal has been turned down, it doesn't mean we don't believe it
has good potential. Maintainers are invited to join the #twim:matrix.org

Hosting FOSDEM 2022 on Matrix

Last year was the first time FOSDEM was hosted on Matrix, and it was generally a huge success - and so the FOSDEM team trusted us again this year and we’re happy to say that it seems to have gone really well! This year’s FOSDEM was massive once again, featuring 654 speakers, 731 events, and 103 tracks.

This year hosting the event went smoother than last year, the only significant issue was some of the Q&A Jitsis not being broadcast to the devrooms on Saturday before 10:15 UTC, for which we offer our apologies to the speakers impacted. This turned out to be a problem with the Matrix<->Jitsi access control sync system which hadn’t showed up during earlier testing, but we patched around it rapidly on the day.

The most notable difference between this year and the previous year has been the usage of a “attendees.fosdem.org” instance in addition to the original “fosdem.org” one, specifically for attendees. The graphs speak for themselves: Synapse could handle the load of the 23K users (13K joined users and 10K lurkers) spread across a total number of 941 rooms. The real eye-opener however is that of the 13K joined users, only 4K came came from the FOSDEM attendee server, and 1K from Libera Chat, meaning that ~70% of the Matrix participants were already on Matrix and came in from existing servers! 🤯 That means the vast majority of people attended over federation. Decentralisation at work, people! It works! We didn’t host the conference… you did!!

But not only did the backend handle the load smoothly: the general user experience felt tightly integrated. People were welcomed by a tailor-made home page in Element to help them navigate through all the tracks and stands:.

One of the great things is it doesn’t require heavy modifications to Element: anyone who installs their own instance of Element can use a simple html file to display relevant information to their audience.

New this year, we also generated a space hierarchy for the whole conference at #fosdem2022:fosdem.org to help navigate the maze of rooms, making it even easier for users on their own servers to jump in:

Another greatly appreciated feature was the famous “maximised widgets” I (Thib) keep telling you about in Matrix Live episodes. Attendees and speakers could give the conference the central attention it deserved while simultaneously keeping an eye on what was happening in the chat.

From the speaker's perspective, we tried to streamline the user journey as much as possible: a bot invited them to a backstage room, in which they joined a Jitsi widget while their talk was being played in the track or devroom. They could see the most upvoted questions by the audience in a dedicated widget. A few minutes before their pre-recorded talk was over, a countdown (new this year!) could be displayed to tell them and the host they were about to go live. At the end of the countdown, the backstage Jitsi was broadcasted to the track so the speaker could answer the questions.

If you want to have an in-depth look at the backend’s architecture, it didn’t change much from last year. You can have a look at last year’s blog post for the details on the setup. Most of the heavy lifting was around the conference bot used to set rooms up, create the spaces, populate them with widgets, arrange layouts and trigger countdowns before going live…

Finally we are immensely proud that we had our first ever Matrix Devroom! Not only does it mean the staff of a large international open source conference thinks it’s worth having a track of our own, it also means our community has grown to the point where we could have 8 hours of back to back Matrix content! Here’s a link to the YouTube playlists to which we are going to add the videos of FOSDEM as they’re being published.

Huge thanks to the FOSDEM team for trusting us, massive shout-out to Element Matrix Services and Element’s Ops and infrastructure team for their fantastic job in setting everything up and making sure everything was ready in time, a sincere thank you to all the fantastic speakers who shared awesome content, and finally to all the attendees. What a weekend!

This year, the Matrix.org Foundation is excited to host the first ever Matrix.org Foundation and Community devroom at FOSDEM. A full day of talks, demos and workshops around Matrix itself and projects built on top of Matrix.

Matrix is the open source project that publishes the Matrix open standard for secure, decentralised, real-time communication, and its Apache licensed reference implementations.

We encourage people working on the Matrix protocol or building on it in an open source project to submit a proposal! Note that companies are welcome to talk about the Matrix details of their open source projects, but marketing talks are not welcome.

We want this devroom to be a space where the Matrix community can show its work, where developers can talk about the challenges they faced and how they overcame them, and where people can get a glimpse of the future of the Matrix protocol and ecosystem.

The talks will be pre-recorded in January. They will be played during FOSDEM, followed by a session of live Q&A depending on the format. During the playback of the talk, people will be able to comment and ask questions in the chat (via Matrix!).

The talks can follow one of three formats:

5 min lightning talk, ideal to showcase your project and make people want to have a look at it

20 min talk + 10 min Q&A, for topics that can be covered briefly

We expect to receive more requests than we have slots available.
