Charter

Purpose

The Matrix Homeserver Decentralisation Working Group promotes decentralisation across the Matrix network by helping users discover and join homeservers other than matrix.org.

The Working Group focuses on improving the onboarding experience across Matrix homeservers and clients. This may include developing technical solutions for homeserver discovery and selection, as well as proposing broader ecosystem improvements that make decentralised onboarding easier and more reliable.

Expected outcomes

• A technical solution that helps users choose a suitable public homeserver.
• A Matrix.org Foundation-maintained list of trusted public homeservers.
• Clear, public criteria for inclusion on and removal from the trusted homeserver list.
• A transparent process through which homeserver operators can apply for inclusion.

Ongoing responsibilities

The Working Group is responsible for maintaining The Matrix.org Foundation’s trusted public homeserver list and periodically reviewing the homeservers included on it.
